The site and its processes

The Culinary Institute of America has a huge library of videos, but they were scattered around the web in various places viewable on random, out-dated players. They asked us to create for them a central video hub that plays single videos and playlists for all devices and can be embedded on all those existing video pages for a seamless UX.

The design had to stand on its own but also work when embedded into another site with its own design. So we kept a clean interface. The embeddable pages’ colors can be modified via EE so they better match their parent site as well.

The site is still a work-in-progress as we keep adding new features. Next up is a pay wall to make certain videos and/or feeds accessible only to customers.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

The EE part was easy, to be honest. There are two channels: Videos and Feeds. The Feeds are essentially playlist with Videos being selected via a Playa field. The Feeds also have the color scheme options, so each Feed can have its own color palette.

The fun part was integrating EE to work with JSON data to send content via AJAX to JWPlayer and getting JWPlayer playlists to work across devices.
