International Polar Foundation
The site and its processes
This is the main site of the International Polar Foundation. It presents the organisation and is a publishing plateform for their projects, news, press releases, pictures, videos, etc.
When I was hired, the foundation was using a custom made PHP CMS. I did a demo of ExpressionEngine and showed them the capabilities of the system and they were sold.
The client wanted a very clean design and agreed to build a fully responsive and mobile / content first website. I designed and developed a new responsive website for them and imported the content from the old website (thanks to Datagrab).
Add-ons and EE special sauce
The main focus was on the projects detail pages. These needed to act as hubs for each project and showcase videos and picture galleries or link to published news, press releases, or even to fully fledged dedicated websites. ExpressionEngine's flexibility in terms of creating custom data structures for all item types really shined here.
The website uses Playa extensively to hande all the relationships between items. The site was also built using Stash, which is used for a template partial approach, to keep code DRY and to provide caching, along with Mustash for handling the cache breaking rules.
