Pallet Racking for commercial storage and warehousing isn't the most exciting topic... unless you're in the business of course! So, to create a website that will make things feel a little more jazzy, we've use the bold Shelf Space branding (blue and yellow) for the main interface and highlight colours. Combined with the some nice big pallet racking project photos, we hope this makes the whole experience a lot more enticing.

Promoting interior and exterior flagstone flooring needs a very visual medium, so having nice large photos on this responsive website was a must-have. Thankfully they had some very nicely shot case studies ready to use, which make the job of designing a website so much easier.

Obviously the product images are the most important element of the site, but there are numerous other important sections too, such as the spec info, how to order, quoting, samples ordering and all the other usual peripheral information.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

Channel Files and Channel Image (by DevDemon) are essential for any EE site - they make uploading and controlling images and files so much easier and flexible.

Snaptcha (by Put Your Lights On) is a great spam filter, to help prevent spam generated by the many forms on the site.

Freeform Pro (by Solspace) give us the power and control to create the forms, from Contact us, to Quoting and Samples ordering.

The site and its processes

We were tasked with creating a new and improved website for Forest Hill Chase with user experience and innovation at the forefront of mind. Being a shopping centre, the main goal was to generate foot traffic to the centre but we were to also find a way to start the experience to delight online with a focus on convenience.

We conducted a series of comprehensive audits of the existing website to better understand the entire customer’s journey.

We used storyboarding and wireframes to visually map out the strategy and content architecture for the new website and crafted the visual design using a mobile first approach which we knew would be essential to the user.

It was imperative that the new website was user friendly and extremely easy to navigate, understanding that convenience and finding relevant information quickly would be important to a positive mobile experience.

With an impressive array of high quality wines, bubbles and spirits we wanted to design and build a website to make buying wine online a joy.

We believe the product is king when it comes to this type of website, so while we needed to keep the existing branding, we wanted to make the product stand out on the page and still provide easy-to-use features and functions.

We have provided all the usual ecommerce features, including minimum order quantities, quantity related product pricing, customer account registration/login and more.

The site and its processes

As one of Glasgow’s oldest theatrical institutions, the Citizen’s Theatre has been at the cultural heart of the city and wider Scottish arts scene for over 70 years. This year, the Citizen’s Theatre or Citz, as it is affectionately known is launching a redevelopment programme that will seek to help cement the theatre’s place as a cultural centre for years to come.

As part of the plans for the Citz, the marketing team wanted to modernise the website while retaining archived listings going back almost ten years.

This presented significant challenges as the content architecture had been patched and modified over the last 9 years resulting in an overly complex codebase. The site redesign involved updating the frontend for responsive design, modifying the content entry interface and logically reworking the CMS to simplify content management.

Beneath the surface, the main focus was increasing the ease of use for Citz staff, reducing the amount of duplicate content entry and automating as much of the workflow as possible to streamline content entry and management.

As Expression Engine was the CMS of choice we were able to achieve much of the required streamlining using native functionality, thus future-proofing the content as much as possible.

The theatre has a huge stock of production photography and the new site allows the excellent images to take centre stage, while retaining the simple black and white aesthetic that was inherited from the previous site design.

The website is heavily optimised to allow it to handle the high volume of daily traffic.

The site and its processes

Nash Community College approached us to redesign their main website after we successfully created a 'mini-site' for their online school. Their existing site had a very flat information hierarchy—counting links in drop down menus, there were over 170 links on their home page! Their primary issue was "nobody can find anything" and we felt this was primarily an issue with organization. We met with them, developed a set of site goals, and re-organized the entire site. Most of the work in this project was the planning; we were very fortunate to have collaborative project leads that listened to our ideas.

The site is a responsive design with 4 views: mobile, tablet, desktop and super sized desktop. We use Susy Compass SCSS processor to manage the breakpoints and CSS.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

A massive amount of content for this site was imported from spreadsheets using the Datagrab add-on from Andrew Weaver. This add-on is crucial for us with big projects like this and Andrew will assist if you run into issues. His assistance helped us enormously with this project. Thanks to his add-on, we were able to automate the migration of about 2/3 of the site content!

The site also has a faculty login area where staff can access forms and other assets. This functionality was given a big assist by Solspace's User add-on. We prefer it over other solutions because it doesn't fiddle with the native member functionality and Solspace has great support.

We also used Low Alphabet and Low Seg2Cat. Low Alphabet powers the 'sort by last name' feature in the Employee Directory and we've found Low Seg2Cat to be enormously helpful when working with anything category driven. On this site, the clean URL structure of the course and program pages is only possible with Low Seg2Cat. Among its many strengths is it's ability to allow you to hide the trigger word 'category' from the URL.

Chandler Architectural Products' commercial glass and glazing work includes an impressive resume of past projects ranging from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts to the Trail Court Building in Plymouth, Mass and many more.

When we started working together in early 2016, their existing website wasn't doing much in the way of showcasing these projects and it wasn’t bringing in any new business leads.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

Our redesign work together included:

  • Redefining the website’s content model so that it more effectively highlights Chandler’s work.
  • Conducting photo shoots of the individual project sites, as well as of company staff to create an engaging look and feel for the site.
  • Creating a password-protected employees-only section to the site that includes an employee news feed, the employee handbook and other important staff information.

On the Expression Engine front, we used our regular go tos:

  • Structure for navigation
  • WYGWAM for text editing
  • CE Image to make it a cinch for company staff to upload images
  • Freeform for the site’s contact forms

Before go live, we conducted our usual content audit, reviewing all site content and functionality to make sure it was in tip top shape before go live.

The result is a website that the Chandler team says is exactly what they were looking looking for and that is already starting to generate new leads!

The site and its processes

We’re a Digital Marketing Agency in Orange County, focused on building growth strategies for established businesses and emerging brands.

This year we set out to re-launch our own branding identity. The launch of our new website served as our announcement.

We’ve been developing websites with ExpressionEngine since 2008, and it has become one of our most used CMS’s. We love the ability to control how content is added and organized, as well as the ability to have complete control over the actual html output. We’re able to create our vision from the ground up, without feeling the constraints and restrictions of your typical CMS.

We wanted our new website to act as a unique experience. It seems incredibly simple on first take, but is increasingly enjoyable to use with surprising details and animations throughout every page. Our new responsive design also allows us to serve an optimized experience to all of our users – no matter what device or browser they’re using.

We couldn’t be happier with our new website, and the reaction we’ve received so far. We hope you get as much enjoyment from using our new website as we did building it!

Add-ons and EE special sauce

Optimization and performance are a large part of any website build. ExpressionEngine makes this process much easier with their new Template Layout feature. Combined with Template Caching, proper disabled entry tags, and script/media optimization, we were able to cut our total load time by over 60%.

Although we have had great experience with many third-party add-ons, the new 454creative.com site is powered by an almost stock ExpressionEngine install. One large exception would be DevDemon’s Channel Images, which makes the process of adding new Work and Blog photos a breeze.

The site and its processes

When I started on this project, the client had an out-of-date website that wasn’t mobile friendly and didn’t use a CMS. The site wasn’t getting updated regularly because the client had to deal with html code every time they made updates.

Their new ExpressionEngine site has a modern look and feel and a responsive design which makes things much easier for the 15% of users who were visiting the old site on mobile devices. The site is super easy to update, speaks more directly to their target audience and is already showing results in terms of conversions.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

  • Deployed EE using Structure to make content management as simple as possible.
  • Used Freeform Pro to create a custom event registration form. The client can now manage the form fields without my involvement.
  • Brought in Detour Pro to ensure that 301 redirects were in place prior to cutover.
  • Used Snaptcha for spam protection on forms (the best solution I’ve found so far for this).
  • WYGWAM was used for large content areas so the client has more freedom but doesn’t need to know code.
  • CE Image so that the client didn't need to worry about pixel perfection with images and we can manipulate them for sizing and optimizing the image size for performance as well.
  • Custom system messages so that the template for error message matches the general website template.
  • Design wise, I focused on imagery that identifies the client with their target audience of engineers. I also developed a content model with different types of content that speak directly to their expertise (FAQs, recent projects, upcoming events). Both of these pieces were key and EE handled them well.
  • I also deployed an email signup form to capture information from users who may not be ready to hire the client, but want to keep in touch.

The cobbler's children have no shoes. The roofer’s roof leaks. The design agency’s site looks stale and doesn’t represent the work they do. The latter is where Antistatic found themselves. Our last web redesign was about 4 years ago and my has time flown past, not to mention the advancements in our industry. It was time we revisited our online presence and brought it into alignment with the work we’ve been doing.

The process included taking an audit content and best work. We created several design concepts and eventually built out the site on the latest and greatest version of ExpressionEngine.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

The Antistatic website was built using ExpressionEngine 3, Freeform, SEO Lite and a few other add-ons to extend the functionality of EE.

The site and its processes

The main requirement when designing this new website for Fuel Express was to show off the products available by utlising their great product photography and echoing the feel of their latest brochure.

Technically speaking, this was a perfect opportunity to recode the site to make it Responsive, so that customers can view all the news and product information on any screen size and mobile device.

This has been one of our first EE3 projects, so it's been nice to get to grips with the new version of ExpressionEngine.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

Although not a complex build in terms of the ExpressionEngine tools required, we employed our usual favourites:

DevDemon - Channel Images; for uploading and rescaling the product images.
DevDemon - Channel Files; for uploading the product datasheets for retailer use.
Put Your Lights On - Expresso; nice editor for creating textual content.
Solspace - Freeform Pro; go-to module for forms.

The site and its processes

The Henry's Fork Anglers site initially came to us as a 'rescue' job after a developer had semi-abandoned the client. After about a year, they gave us the opportunity to redesign the site.

The previous site wasn't organized well and the analytics showed a high bounce rate and little engagement. We cleaned up the interface and imposed a bit of order while also developing a responsive design and completely revamping the store.

These guys run a fly fishing outfitter and guide service in one of the most beautiful parts of the US. We're fortunate that our principal contact is also a photographer who takes his camera with him when on guide duty... seriously, the imagery provided is breathtaking.

Since the redesign, bounces are down 45% and page views and time on site has almost doubled. Store sales are up, even though they've not completely finished entering products.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

We focus on long term maintenance with clients and, as such, typically try to build sites with as few add-ons as humanely possible. We used CartThrob for the e-commerce functions and leaned heavily on DataGrab to import the existing blog and fishing report entries from the old site.

The Hatch Chart is pretty sweet—it changes dynamically depending upon the current_date parameter, so it always shows the current month's 'peak flies.' The yearly chart below allows a prospective visitor to see which insects are at peak in which month, which helps with trip planning. And of course, now we know more about fly-fishing than your average web dev.

We've had a lot of fun with some of the fly lure names: I mean come on... "Chubby Chernobyl" ... how could you not? We created a pretty cool filter for the store items which loads all the items in the category via AJAX requests, then removes any products that don't match the filter param. Their previous dev apparently hadn't known about EE's channel entries tag default limit of 100, so for the first time ever site visitors can now view ALL of the flies they have available. Good stuff.

After a 3 year lifespan our previous website was looking dated both in terms of design but also technology. We decided to move away from our current CMS and make use of ExpressionEngine to create a new site and bring us a little bit more up to date.

Built using ExpressionEngine' powerful channel system, template manager and addons alongside the strong Foundation 5 responsive framework with Isotope thrown in for infinite scrolling smooth masonry style layouts the CFA creative and digital team were able to create a new website that not only looked a lot better than previous but also showed what we were capable of.

Showcasing a little about the company, the work we have done in the past and the services we offer this new website design was fresh and clean and something that could move the company forwards.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

This site makes use of the following addons from multiple sources:
Freeform for all contact forms,
Matrix for greater control in image fields,
Navee to create any navigation needed with ease,
Threaded Comments used within the blog pages pretty self explanatory this one,
Tagger again used for the blog this time to add custom tags to blog entries,
Likee adds the like buttons to the blog pages,
Resizer to allow on the fly image caching,
Reelocate for ease of moving the site between Local to dev to uat to Live servers,
Switchee adds a powerful switch/case control to our templates.

We rebuilt & redesigned the site using EECMS and have since seen an overall increase in traffic, with an increase in the number of pages visited, time spent on site and more importantly an increase in conversions from vistors to bookings.

We have recently installed additional functionality allowing visitors to select holidays based on location, activity type and dificulty. Also we've now added social commenting via Facebook to our blog.

This completely new soap retail business called for branding design as well as a new ecommerce website.

Once the branding and logo had been designed, we could get started on the website design. The two most important things with site, were to make the products clear and make the purchasing process as obvious as possible - although we do like the "Add To Bath" idea instead of using the standard "Add To Basket" button. We had to go with a more soapy theme after all!

We knew that most of the customers using this site would most likely be female, so we have designed it with a soft and elegant - and fun - look & feel. As the product photos are really the main element that sell the products, we wanted to keep the overall website design clean and uncluttered. We hope you like it.

Naturally his site is video-heavy and uses Expression Engine to manage all of the media files required to display his work. DevDemon Channel Videos is used to pull information for each video directly from Vimeo Pro while the native Grid function is used to replicate the various media sizes from the Vimeo Pro backend. This makes it possible to manage the 4-5 different video resolutions per entry.

Template Routes makes it possible to easily redirect outdated urls from the previous version of the site.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

Caching is essential as the site is bandwidth intensive. Additionally although the pages are quite simple they are built using multiple embedded templates and multiple channel entry tags. To counter this we 've used the brilliant CE Cache.

They will feed 12,000 people this year (or more).

We wanted the site to be simple to navigate. There are four basic things we needed to communicate: how to get help, how to help, what campaigns are currently going on, and how to donate.

Performance was a focus as well since so many people will be accessing this on a mobile device.

This responsive, Bootstrap-based website is built on EE 2.10.1 by PaleoSun, Inc. and designed by 828:design out of Asheville, NC.

The site caters to two audiences: engineers looking for a partner to develop a custom heating solution, and plant managers looking for an existing product that fits their needs.

To assist engineers visiting the site, a suite of calculators is accessible by clicking in the top right corner. Users can pop out the calculators and drag them around on the page, and their position is remembered as the user navigates throughout the site.

The website also features a video library, product comparison tool, engineering articles, and an easy-to-use contact form that integrates with the clients Zoho CRM.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

It integrates such add-ons as Low Search, Low Variables, and Nav-EE for easy access to content for users and easy editing of content and navigation for admins. Using add-ons like CE Image, Stash + Mustash, and Minimee, the site loads extremely fast, with a YSlow score of 91%.

For the standard product line, we have built a custom product configuration tool that makes it easy to specify a valid part number and communicate with a salesperson. Through our custom module control panel, an admin can define the options and exclusion rules that drive this complex product builder.

We also had to make sure there was space for some items that their dev team were working on like the Results section.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

We used Single Entry for the About, BGN, Contact, Labs, and a portion of the Support page. The Channels with multiple entries in them are Members, Misc, News, Products, Q&A, and Support.

SEO was a focus for this site as they wanted to make sure they ranked higher. So we gave them the ability to edit their Title Tags and Meta Description. There is a blog that is not active. And we have additional fields in the channel for the staff that has not been filled in just yet.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

We love Single Entry. We use it on a lot of sites. This site uses it for the About, Contact, and Homepage. We have channels for Blog, Staff, Services, and Tutorials. This is a simple site so nothing too magical to see.

The tutorials channel is something we do on every site we build. It contains a video and a description. The video is a screencast of me walking the client through that portion of the site. We find that cuts down on the emails asking how something is done.

The site and its processes

This was a site we were not responsible for designing. We only did the front end code and ExpressionEngine.

KHI was a really difficult project. They had a Django site that had content all thrown into a single "channel" but with supporting content spread out across multiple channels. This created a difficult situation when trying to automate the migration out of Django into ExpressionEngine.

The site is pretty big. There are probably close to 8000+ entries in the site. But the client is super pleased.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

We used a lot of single entries to allow them to enter in content on landing pages.

The entries for News and Policy / Research use the same channel field group. Remember the Django issue we talked about above? Well putting everything into separate channels but using the same channel field group gave us the ability to move content if the client found that we had placed an entry in the wrong channel.

The Staff members are all entered into a separate channel and then they can be pulled into an entry in the Blog, News, or Policy and Research channels through a relationship field.

The site and its processes

As a growing agency, with service offerings that not only target new start-ups, but also mid-sized companies, 92 West needed a site that clearly conveyed our full capabilities, relevant case studies and work examples. Our new site also needed to do a better job at engaging site visitors through our best practices and implementation of subtle, but direct, call-to-action messaging.

Furthermore, with the redesign and launch, we went through our own discovery process of who we were and where we wanted to go.   With that in mind, we selected a number of options that we wanted to incorporate into our new site and addressed our internal branding, marketing strategy and search engine marketing goals as well.

New Features:

  • ExpressionEngine Content Management System
  • Fully Optimized for SEO
  • Automated Posting to Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn from the Impact Blog
  • Automated Site-Map and Search Engine Notifications
  • Automated Image Resizing for Every Post and Image Use
  • Responsive Design
  • HTML5 Video Integration
  • Blog Migration from WordPress
  • Import of XML from Old Flash Site
  • Sync with 92 West's CRM and Marketing Automation Platforms
  • RSS Syndication with SEM Network
  • Live User Tracking Incorporated with Conversion Tracking
  • Parallax Scrolling and Custom Header Images Pulled from Individual Posts; making each page unique
  • Custom Iconography and Graphics to Showcase the Company, Culture and Clients

Why ExpressionEngine?

We needed a content management system that would allow us to generate content on the fly and also allow us to rapidly develop / deploy new or revamped sections as we deem appropriate. Our team continues to work with WordPress, Joomla and Concrete 5, but for our needs... it was an easy call to use ExpressionEngine.

The Need for Change: Listening to Our Own Advice

As client work always comes first, we fell into the trap of not drinking our own "Kool-Aid" and the making of the site was a group effort. It took a lot of late hours and weekends to generate the 200+ pages.  At this time I'd like to thank our family and friends for their support and understanding as well as our client's for making the renovated 92 West site possible!

Here's to a great start of 2015!

Add-ons and EE special sauce

The beautiful part of EE is that we can take components of any built component and incorporate it into our own system.  Modifiying the jQuery Plugin: http://goo.gl/j7aMXk and incorporating the filter aspect was unique, but definately a "value add" to our SEO and gallery display.

Code:

The site and its processes

The official website for Rubik's Brand Limited.

The site's aim is to be the "go-to" location for all things "Rubiks". It employs ExpressionEngine's multi site manager to provide location specific sites to North America, Europe and the UK.

The web shop is provided by Expresso Store and sells a wide range of official Rubik's Brand items including the "classic" 3x3 cube, puzzles, games, jigsaws, stickers and novelty gifts. Using multi site manager the product pricing is displayed in UK Pounds, Euros and US Dollars with orders funnelled for local fulfillment.

We inherited an existing (non responsive) site built on an old version of EE and started by upgrading to 2.9.2 along with all the plugins. We then gave the site a re-design, which included making it responsive.

We're now working on desgns and layouts for many of the content pages so expect the site to change and improve over the year.

Add-ons used are: Expresso Store, Channel Images, Crumbly, Detour Pro, Low Reorder, SEO Lite, Transcribe, MC Country and GW Code Categories.

We also developed our own plug-in to allow the client to manage product filtering by price and category.

The site and its processes

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is a university-level institution in the South-East of Ireland with over 10,000 students and 1,000 staff. WE offer tuition and research programmes in various areas from Higher Certificate to Degree to PhD.

Our site is large with 15,000+ pages and around 250,000 visitors an month. It serves a large community, including prospective students, current students, staff, research, business, industry and many more. We have around 90 staff who regularly contribute to the site.

The current site is a redesign of our first Expression Engine powered site which launched in 2012.Proir to that we used another CMS widely used in higher education sites but found that it didn’t give us the flexibility that we required.

The new version of the site was launched on the 18th of December 2014. The main focus of the project was to convert the site over to a responsive layout and overhaul the complete design of the site. The project took a year to complete and was done in conjunction with Emagine Media an award winning web agency based in Waterford and part of the EE pro network. They were also involved in the original redesign in 2012 and introduced us to Expression Engine.
We have found the Expression Engine gives us the scalability and flexibility we need to manage and develop a site of this size. On a day to day basis the institute creates a large amount of content and with Expression Engine even an untechnical user can create effective content. We will continue to use it and roll it out to a number of other websites that are part of the institutes organisation.

The site and its processes

Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is part of the UK's National Health Service delivering a range of mental health, community care services and specialist medical expertise throughout the country of Cumbria.

The site features a lot of content, with some of this drawn from third party sites. The start point was to build a comprehensive sitemap using the excellent Slickplan. This can be shared with clients (and versioned) so it was a great way to work collaboratively. We also wanted to understand the structure of the content going in to the new site, so we built a content prototype in EE allowing very early client access to the CMS. They could populate this into some standard templates helping us to understand more about the custom fields that would be required for the final site. Wireframes followed to illustrate how the content could be presented before starting the creative work and EE integration.

Like most of our work, CSS has been authored using SASS/Compass and compiled using Codekit and the site is fully responsive. Accessibility was a key requirement, so the site can viewed in a number of colours for different sight conditions, with Browsealoud providing audible content.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

This site draws content from a couple of third party sites. The NHS has a content API, so rather than recreating information about medical conditions, this is pulled into the site using a combination of Andrew Weaver's Feed Parser and the native RSS parser and cached locally (this was dependent on the original source formatting).

Press releases are pulled in from an external distribution site using Datagrab. The site also uses a custom Google search to index PDF documents on the site, with results displayed using Low Google Search. We've also used a number of Low's other plugins, including:

  • Low variables
  • Low events
  • Low alphabet
  • Low reorder
  • Low search

Structure provides the navigation and site hierachy, with Zenbu added to customise listing views in the control panel. Google Maps for EE shows details of different hospitals and clinics across the county. We had to use Freebie on a couple of occasions to 'break' Structure's strict URL parsing, particularly around categories, tags and events.

A couple of custom snippets were added to automatically pull in an entry title from a Structure pages fieldtype, along with a Freeform extension to prevent submissions being saved to the database.

Other favourites installed on the site include Wygwam, Matrix and Playa.

The site and its processes

Windermere Lake Cruises is one of the UK's most popular tourist attractions, having consistently appeared in the Visit Britain top 10 over recent years. We were really excited to build them a responsive site as we knew that many of their customers would already have started their vacation and therefore access the site through their phone or tablet. Since the site launch in late 2014, it now shows almost a 50/50 split between desktop and mobile devices.

The entire site revolves around the cruises themselves which can all be bought online. The region has some spectacular scenery, so strong imagery was important, along with a means to access timetables and filter cruises based on your preferred start location. Relationship fieldtypes have allowed the client to upsell and cross sell to other cruises and Google maps have been used to show the route taken by each cruise, along with points of interest and car parks.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

The key feature of this site was the need to link in to a pretty complex timetable and ticketing database we'd built 2 years earlier. This meant that we needed to create a number of custom plugins which exist throughout the site wherever timetable or pricing information is requested. We added the separate database instance to EE's database config, enabling us to use CodeIgniter's classes and helpers.

The checkout process runs over a sub-domain making it standalone from the main EE site. Customers booking a cruise online receive a barcoded PDF voucher by email return, and a dynamic XML feed updates the client's till systems allowing vouchers to be scanned and checked prior to departure.

Beyond the additional database and custom plugins, the site also uses:

  • Structure
  • Channel videos
  • Freeform
  • Low variables
  • SEO Lite
  • Stash
  • Wygwam
  • Zoo Triggers

Shortly after taking over the site, the client had problems with performance of the site due to a number of third party integrations with Flickr and Google Calendar no longer working (deprecated API's). We rebuilt the entire site in EE2 with a new design making it fully responsive and writing a number of custom add-ons to connect and populate the site.

Don’t let it give you any ideas, but in about 90 days Solspace built and launched a new website for developer.nokia.com. This was an unusually compressed timeline. But through an extraordinary team effort on all sides, we launched on time and on budget. We used ExpressionEngine and wrote many custom add-ons to integrate with about 5 separate back-end API’s for various functions. The site integrates with a single sign-on system to provide a seamless experience for Nokia users, a downloads API and a devices API to take advantage of centralizing content and data. The site was architected to take full advantage of Akamai caching capabilities in order to achieve consistently fast page load times.

Far and away though, above and beyond the technical achievements mentioned, we think this project serves as a great example of the Solspace Team’s ability to integrate itself into other teams in a friendly, professional and highly effective manner in order to achieve excellence on a large scale.

Salesforce for BSR

bsr.org

The site and its processes

BSR's (bsr.org) mission is to work with its global network of more than 250 member companies to build a just and sustainable world. That mission is served in part through a number of technologies that break down barriers to efficiency for companies and the people they work with. Salesforce, one of BSR's preferred tools, is used to manage a number of important business processes. Much of that content and business logic translates to the ExpressionEngine®-based website that serves so many critical functions for BSR's initiatives.

Solspace’s work with BSR on this project included concept, strategy, design and build of a solution that would integrate Salesforce business processes with those on the EE side. We developed an EE module that successfully bridged the two systems, providing a conduit through which business logic, content and entity relationships could be kept in sync. As the module evolved, we improved on the code base and pared down the system logic and constraints as complexity increased. This resulted in an efficiently extensible system that could adapt to changes in conditions and constraints as organization goals for the system were refined and enhanced.

At every point throughout the project, the Solspace team stayed true to the maxim that software serves people best when it stays out of the way.

The site and its processes

Solspace has been helping ProPublica with rapid growth and change since launching their website in 2008.

ProPublica is an internet based, non-profit source of investigative journalism. Solspace has an ongoing role in the evolution of ProPublica's site: building out new content sections under tight deadlines, creating frameworks for the presentation of ongoing stories, expanding the site's reach to mobile devices, and integrating site functions with a variety of external systems via API including ChartBeat, Factiva and DocumentCloud.

Editorial Workflow and Curation

Solspace does ongoing work to optimize the EE control panel for the publishing workflow of ProPublica's reporters and editors. These optimizations include:

  • editorial preview of pending and draft articles
  • multiple home page layouts
  • WYSIWYG fields that can be turned off on a per-user basis
  • curation tools for home page feature spots, the mobile site and mobile apps

An example of our extensive customization work for ProPublica can be seen in their curation tool. When developing smaller ExpressionEngine sites, we are able to use statuses for curating things like featured stories. ProPublica outgrew this method as it developed a mobile site and mobile apps that needed curation independent of the web site. ProPublica also wanted finer control over the featured stories on its homepage.

The curation tool interface displays a list of the most recent posts to many content sections. Directly from this tool, content editors are able to see which stories are currently featured for both mobile and the site's homepage and modify the selections. There are three featured positions that editors can curate. All stories are by default published to mobile, but editors can exclude stories when needed. The tool also communicates to editors if a story has data fields populated that are required for featuring a story. One of three variable homepage layouts can be selected. Content for the three featured positions is auto-filled in form fields so that editors have the option to override the default content to deliver a customized homepage headline or summary.

Varnish Caching and ExpressionEngine

ProPublica uses a server-side caching tool called Varnish that is incredibly useful for protecting against performance problems due to traffic spikes. Solspace collaborates with the ProPublica team to create tools that selectively invalidate cached pages for articles and all of their related index and topic pages when an article is added or edited. This insures that while Varnish is delivering lightning fast pageviews, users are seeing the most current versions of all pages.

Plays Well With Others

In the summer of 2010, Solspace worked under a tight deadline to launch a redesign of ProPublica.org. The project involved close cooperation between Mule Design and ProPublica's internal team of developers. Mule provided HTML/CSS and ProPublica provided JS, and these were still in flux when a tight deadline demanded that ExpressionEngine integration begin. Code changes were tracked in SVN and translated to the build as they happened. All involved rose to the challenge and the redesign launch met it's deadline.

In redeveloping the site, Solspace re-engineered significant parts of the site's data structure to conform with the redesign. We took the opportunity to make template and data improvements that would streamline future growth.

Expertise, Attention and Reliability

Our relationship with ProPublica demonstrates Solspace's high level of technical dexterity with ExpressionEngine. We also bring a strong work ethic, enthusiasm, and a sense of responsibility to our work. In the past year, ProPublica has won a Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Journalism as well as numerous other awards. They have produced groundbreaking investigations and are telling stories that have the potential to create positive change. We are proud to play a part in ProPublica's important work.

The site and its processes

We love working with foodies and food businesses, so when the opportunity to build a new website for a food truck in Sonoma, CA came our way, we were pretty excited. Drums & Crumbs needed a  site that matched their fun and colorful branding to show off their food and services, but also let followers know where they can find the truck on any given day.

The site features the truck calendar in grid and list format, menus, photo galleries, press entries and locations from where the team sources their food.

We love Campaign Monitor, so we have that integrated for email marketing to let followers know where they can find the Drums & Crumbs truck and team.

The super busy Drums & Crumbs team needed to be able to edit and add content to the site in the most efficient way, so we set up all pages in Structure with Channel Images in place for creating photos galleries.

Shine PDF assists with generating PDFs right from the menu pages for when the team doesn't have time to update and upload a designed PDF.

With five locations around downtown Chicago, Sopraffina serves gourmet pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and salads to the office lunch crowd for not much more than you'd spend at a fast food place.

Sopraffina's owners had a new design to refresh their aging website and asked Bold Yellow to build it. We had built an earlier restaurant website for the client using ExpressionEngine and they loved using it. So it was a no-brainer that we'd use EE for this project.

Thanks to our friends at Grip Design for sending us this great project for a great client.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

The site makes extensive use of categories, sub-categories and even some sub-sub-categories, so critical add-ons here were Low Seg2Cat, GWcode Categories and GWcode HasChildren.

Also, Zoo Flexible Admin and dashEE were key to making the EE control panel an easy-to-use experience for the client.

A few other essential add-ons include Low Variables, CE Image, Backup Pro, Wygwam and the always helpful Developer accessory tab.

This was a responsive redo for a client looking to update their online marketing and branding.

We took the content from the previous site and moved it over into ExpressionEngine.  The original idea was for a single-page site, but that proved too heavy for the content involved. So we opted to break out some of the sections, notably the Work and Blog into their own secondary pages.

I'm currently working on a full length post to detail some recent updates to improve performance on the site.

The site and its processes

Julie Felsher was looking for a way to redesign her current website to offer online programs in nutrition and coaching without utilizing a number of third-party tools. The new site needed a secure member area, e-commerce and email marketing integration that would work seamlessly within an easy to use CMS.

Starting with the design, the plan was to break away from the traditional nutrition coach look and feel, giving her a step ahead. You won't find squeeze pages or never-ending scrolling here. Just clean, easy to navigate content that is accompanied by beautiful, professional photos. Making the site fully responsive was a priortity so that the entire site looks amazing on any device.

Her clients can learn about and purchase her programs, access downloadable and audio program content, complete client intake forms, and connect with Julie directly through the secure member hub. Instagram feeds share client progress and participation in photo contests.

Campaign Monitor is tighly integrated into the purchase process to get clients onto the right email lists for auto-responders and special notifications.

SECOND+WEST also helped walk Julie through setting up email marketing, online payments, secure web hosting and domain management.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

Julie can manage every aspect of her site from within EE - that's why we love it so much.

We added Exp-resso Store to the site for e-commerce, and a custom plugin that added in custom fields for list IDs in Campaign Monitor so that clients buying a specific programs were added to a program-specific list.

Structure makes it easy for her to manage static pages and blog entries. And Postmaster was a must-have for email notifications. Zoo Visitor gets members into the system and Zoo Flexible Admin allows for custom admin navigation within EE.

Finally, I have launched my new website!

It has been more than a year since I have last launched my old website. Just a few weeks back, I have decided to kick off and complete the re-design process. I have decided to take up the challenge by building it all on my own. Everything was completely created from the scratch using Illustrator, Photoshop and Webflow for the front-end development. It is fully responsive and look great on any screen resolution.

I wanted to give it a fresh new look and keep it as clean and simple at the same time. My new website showcases mylatest work with detailed case studies for each project. As you can see, I have rebranded my personal logo as well. Gold and black are used as the brand mark colors as these two colors often associated with premium and high quality services.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

Everything was completely created from scratch from drawing on a sketch book, vectorizing using Adobe Illustrator, arranging in Adobe Photoshop and drag & drop in Webflow.

The site and its processes

The audience for the anniversary website included engineering and science professionals ages 20-100. Approx. 300 men and women graduate from Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences each year. And for the last 150 years they have gone on to become Nobel Prize winners, astronauts and scientists. Vector Media Group had to take into account the range in ages, locations (browsers), and interests.

The primary objective was to build an interactive, rich site that would engage Columbia alumni.

We've created a robust backend to house 250+ pieces of content and streamline a usability flow that made multiple interactions intuitive for the alumni.

This started with the clean, photo-driven layout (from Stark Design), which centered on a large Columbia University logo and blue color palette. To keep the homepage content organization simple, the nav included only three prioritized sections – Events, History, and Memories. Then, to add movement to the design, Vector Media Group coded four interactive elements: a full-screen background slideshow with navigational arrows that also auto-rotates every six seconds, an interactive history timeline with jump-to-date functionality, Facebook and Twitter integration, and a carousel of milestone dates.

To further increase participation, Vector Media Group’s award-winning development team strategically allowed visitors to perform eight actions:

1. Sort
2. Search
3. Refine
4. Select
5. Download
6. Share
7. Map
8. Add Custom Content

The development work that created these unique features included: implementing the ExpressionEngine CMS, YouTube integration, Facebook and Twitter API feeds, and a tagging system.

In the end, alumni participation was well documented with alumni uploading 57% of Memory posts and retweeting the @ColumbiaUniversity post with the website link. The multitude of alumni-engagement points made the online destination a complete success.

The site and its processes

Beech Constructions is a Brisbane-based construction company with a long-term reputation and proven track record for providing cost-effective quality products. They had an existing website built withExpressionEngine, but they didn't like the design, it had a number of display problems with different results in different browsers, and wasn't as easy to update as they would've liked.

We gave the site a clean, simple design that fitted more tightly with the company's branding and made good use of images showcasing the company's outstanding work. ExpressionEngine was upgraded and enhanced with new features which made updating content easier, particularly the handling of multiple images for the different project entries.

Add-ons and EE special sauce

One of the things site editors struggled with their initial build was managing images so we installed Pixel & Tonic's Assets which made adding images on the back-end easy. And with CE Image on the front-end, the site had a very flexible image management solution.

The site and its processes

Optica approached Antistatic in need of a major website overhaul and we delivered.

Optica Technologies, the leading provider of externals for IBM System Z servers, has been making peripherals for over 45 years and their website was showing its age. After working with their team to refine their sales approach and web-based product presentation, we led them through different user stories and the creation of a new website information architecture. The new content structure was further refined by creating user experience wireframes to detail the navigation and page-by-page interactions through the website.

Once the user experience was solidified, we pursued the creative presentation of the website by working out each unique page design. These designs were programmed responsively and powered by ExpressionEngine. Optica's new responsive website means that any user, whether on a mobile phone, tablet device or traditional laptop or desktop computer is presented with the best possible content experience. With the dynamic mix of site responsiveness and ExpressionEngine, we were able to provide Optica with one powerful website.
