UBC School of Journalism

The graduate journalism program at UBC needed a Web site overhaul; their site was stale and hard to update. They also happen to be a bike ride’s distance from Hop Studios world headquarters. How could we say no?

We did the previous version of the site, 4 years ago: moved them to a new server, installed ExpressionEngine, redesigned their site, developed the HTML and extra functionality and trained their staff to do simple ongoing updates.

The new site keeps much of the same information structure, but is much easier for prospective students to navigate, and brings students, alumni and visitors directly to the information they need.
It also integrates Facebook and Twitter throughout the site; on individual content items and in the site navigation.

It’s not just easier to update—in some cases, it updates itself. Check out the Facebook box, and on the iTunes university podcast series. Nifty.

You probably need a masters degree in computer science in order to create such a nice website for a Journalism School. I have to say that I visited their website and your work is quite amazing. Congrats!!

Wow, I love the way the website is designed. It’s user friendly which is, for me, the most important thing when it comes to websites. I wish I could do that, but I do other kind of design, I just got my instructional design degree and I’m so happy about it that I feel the need to share the news with everyone. Anyway, great job on the site!

This site is definitely easy to navigate, I like that. What a coincidence Sofia, I also got my online masters degree in criminal justice and I also love everything about journalism. I’m thinking of getting another degree but maybe I should take a break. I hate it when I’m so undecided; I sometimes wish someone else could take all the decisions for me.

It looks great. I have always wanted to be a journalist, especially when I was little. I was watching TV and the reporters used to fascinate me, and you know how kids get easily impressed. Apparently the masters in criminal justice were the ones that really caught my attention after all. I don’t regret my choice, but I still think journalism is cool.

My daughter has a thing about journalism. She will have to wait, I’m at the stage where I’m searching colleges in Idaho for her. On the one hand I guess it’s good to know exactly what you want, to focus on something, on the other hand I’m afraid she only likes the idea, the concept of journalism and she doesn’t really know what it’s about; I don’t want her to be disappointed.

Thank you for providing this interesting website.I’ve recently graduated high school and I want to make a career in journalism but I can’t convince my parents to let me study this as they want me to take a behavioral analysis degree and to work with children. My best friend is studying at the UBC School of Journalism and she is very satisfied of what she learns there.

I developed a passion for journalism since I was a kid but I listened to my parents advice and I took my human resources degree in Boston. Now I’m thinking about attending to journalism and follow my dream.
