St. Croix County Fairgrounds
The St. Croix County Fairgrounds host several large community events each year, and now has a website powered by ExpressionEngine. The website follows a relatively traditional “content + modules” concept, and is easy to manage with Structure and Playa doing most of the heavy lifting.
The content is managed across several different channels: pages, image galleries, homepage slider, event calendar, static HTML modules, and PDF lists. Many of these channels contain entries which are displayed as “modules” above, next to, or below the primary text content of each page. Modules are associated with pages via three Playa fields. Some modules have location restrictions - some can be displayed in the narrow side column, but not the wide bottom column, for instance - which are managed on a per-entry basis with a custom status field. Using Playa’s filters, we’re able to present content managers with options that will render correctly without having to make them remember which modules can go where.
From a web developer perspective, the daily events module is probably the most interesting. Each calendar (Rodeo, County Fair, etc.) has a single entry which contains a single Matrix field. Each row in the Matrix has a date, title, description, and “Featured” check box. Each calendar entry has a custom CSS theme, and can be displayed in a narrow or wide format. The template that displays these entries uses some custom PHP to break the Matrix results up appropriately across several tabs (one tab per day), as well as some custom jQuery to assist with presentation.
