Republic Factory
Republic Factory is a Swedish digital design studio that specializes in web and mobile development, interface design and custom icon design. Founded in 1998 and in its current shape since 2002 we’ve been around for quite some time and experienced a lot of different languages and CM-systems. For now we’ve settled for ExpressionEngine in most projects.
We have been using ExpressionEngine and CodeIgniter on client projects since 2007, and thought it was about time to rebuild our own site lately and it is build upon ExpressionEngine.
The site needed to be in both Swedish and English, and we wanted to build a responsive site that worked really well on smart phones, tablets and large screens. The main reason we like ExpressionEngine is that we have full template freedom and that we can write the HTML the way we want.
Most of our clients and visitors are based in Sweden, and since we got an excellent mobile network where almost everyone who uses a smart phone also have unlimited data plans and high speed connections we kept a lot of graphics on the mobile version as well.
Since we have been developing sites with ExpressionEngine we also have found a way to work around the few things we don’t appreciate with it. This includes a custom made and strict text editor for the Edit screen, a SEO helper, and a multi language variable add-on called Republic Variables and some other small goodies including Republic Analytics.
The other add-ons used on the site include the excellent, and almost indispensable, Matrix from Pixel & Tonic and Phil Sturgeon’s REST module.
On the Swedish site there is also an article section with articles about design and technology. We used the DataGrab add-on from Andrew Weaver to import posts and comments from the old system.
Since the site has a lot of graphics we spend some additional time making sure that the high-resolution images in the scroller first loads low quality images to speed up the rendering and some other small tweaks to make the experience better for the visitor.

Many thanks for your educational document. I am in fact at work at the moment! So I have to go off without reading all I’d like. However I’ve added your blog to my RSS feed so that I can take my time to go via your web page… text spy @@@@@
