Grace Presbyterian Church has been an active part of the Montclair, New Jersey, community for over 100 years. This website is intended to highlight the dynamic character of the church’s worship and other programs and make resources from the church, including sermon audio and interactive Bible studies, available to the wider community. The design of the site attempts to reflect the beauty of the church’s traditional building, highlighting details from the church’s beautiful stained glass windows.
The site uses fifteen separate weblogs, generally one for each primary section and several for more specialized content. Each primary section of the site also has a separate template group. Each weblog makes use of custom fields, and several utilize custom status groups and/or categories.
The Worship weblog, which provides the information for the upcoming worship schedule, the sermon archive, and the sermon podcast, is the most complex. It uses sixteen custom fields of numerous types, including several standard text input, textarea, and drop-down list fields, as well as three Matrix fields, two Wygwam fields, and two P&T Switch fields. One Matrix field handles the sermon audio information: it comprises an nGen File Field for uploading the MP3 file and four text input fields for meta information about the file. One P&T Switch field allows the staff to easily choose whether a particular sermon will be archived on the site.
By contrast, the Devotions weblog, which provides a weekly list of suggested Bible readings to complement the upcoming sermon, is very simple: it includes seven text input fields, one for each day of the week. The complete weekly list is published in the Worship section, and the reading for the current date is pulled onto the home page using time-based conditionals. All references to Bible passages, in devotions and elsewhere throughout the site, are linked to the full text using the Scripturizer plugin.
The home page pulls in information from several weblogs in addition to the daily devotional reading. The events listed in the Featured Events section are pulled from the calendar, which is built with the Solspace Calendar module, via a custom “Featured” status. The ED Image Resizer plugin is used to size and crop images to uniform thumbnails. Events with additional detail link to the respective event detail page, and the dates link to the respective daily calendars. The Bible Study section excerpts introductory information from the most recently published interactive Bible study.
The Upcoming Worship section displays information on worship services scheduled in the next seven days. The details of the worship services are published in the Worship weblog and related to the Calendar:Events weblog through a standard related entries field. The home page listings are pulled from the Calendar:Events weblog rather than the Worship weblog to facilitate displaying each service separately. The Sermon Online information is pulled from the Worship weblog. Since audio is not available for all sermons that are archived, we change an entry’s status to “Audio” when audio is uploaded after a service, so that the sermon that is on the home page always has audio.
