Charles Rennie Mackintosh Font Company
This was the site that started me on the web.
In the early 90s - my dad designed the Charles Rennie Mackintosh font for Windows and Mac, originally distributed boxed on a 3 1/2” floppy disk (remember those?) Distribution was becoming an issue in terms of production costs and alternatives were looked at.
Circa ‘97, dad had heard about this thing called the Internet and how pretty soon, all businesses would be doing business “online”. After some digging he found a local internet development company who told him they could develop a virtual store where the customer could make a purchase and then download immediately. The benefits were obvious of course.
So a deposit was paid and work began - oh no wait - that’s not what happened. A deposit was paid and the company did a runner :-(
There wasn’t any money left to hire another company and so Dreamweaver & Fireworks and Photoshop were bought and dad and I “designed” & “developed” an ecommerce store in html (using tables and lots of spacer gifs of course) and some PayPal buttons.
The site was moved to X-Cart & subsequently Zen Cart as more fonts were added but we lost granular control of the design.
When I started looking at EE in ‘07/08 I knew it would be a good fit for this site although would most likely need some extending for digital downloads. Then Cart Throb appeared and it made the decision to change easy.
So with a quiet spot in “real” client work, I set about the redesign and development of the site. The real joy was what originally attracted me to EE, the ability to design without my CMS restricting my layout.
CartThrob made the ecommerce integration a breeze and payments are still PayPal powered. Any future dev should be pretty rapid than having to hack away at layouts.

I’ve always thought making business with your relatives was a bad idea, but it seems that there are exceptions from the rule. I’m not so sure about it, though, I mean, I have never thought of trading a solo business with one that implies someone I see all the time. Wasn’t it hard to see him at home and at work, too?

I love your dad’s way of thinking and I love Mackintosh. I’ve recently seen something from this brand on some Tucson classifieds websites and I immediately started worshiping the style. Too bad I didn’t think about having a business of my own. It’s not that bad, though, if your dad had the guts to do this at a certain age, I will do the same and won’t give up!

A friend of mine recently told me a lot of stuff about the Mackintosh history, things that I really didn`t know so far. Well, with his masters degree information security and his know-how background in the IT field, it always fascinates me to hear him talking about the IT business world and the extraordinary evolution paths from the last twenty years or so. Even someone who doesn`t know a thing about IT will be amazed on listening to these stories.
